Hello, welcome to my website.
I am a researcher, senior lecturer and photographer with a strong academic background in photography (MA in Photography from Goldsmiths College, University of London, and a PhD in Photography from University of Brighton).
During the academic year 2022-23, I was a visiting research fellow in the Department for Media and Communication Studies at Södertörn University in Stockholm, Sweden, and in 2025, I was a Visegrad Research Fellow at the Open Society Archive in Budapest, Hungary.
I have two areas of research related to photography and visual methods that I'm currently pursuing:
1) I examine photography as a mode of cultural resistance in communist Romania (1947–1989) and across Eastern Europe during the Cold War. Grounded in an interdisciplinary, trauma‑informed methodology that draws on memory studies, resistance politics and visual culture, my work centres on private photographic archives and the practices of little‑known or overlooked (professional and amateur) photographers. Through these materials, I investigate everyday negotiations, interventions and socio‑cultural dynamics that shaped ordinary life under communist regimes. Moreover, my research contributes to broader efforts to decolonise the Western photographic canon by foregrounding marginalised, under‑represented and previously obscured perspectives, thereby expanding and diversifying the historical understanding of photographic history and practice. Alongside my peer-reviewed publications in this area, I also curate creative and public-facing photography exhibitions that aim to bring different people and perspectives together: those, who lived during Romania’s communist era and those, who have no lived experience of that period but grew up in post-communist Romania. By taking an intergenerational approach that creates dialogue, the exhibitions aim to foreground the importance of preserving cultural memory.
2) I am interested in using creative visual methods with under-represented and marginalised groups and people to address inequalities and am currently a Co-Investigator on the AHRC-funded project Coastal Communities & Creative Health.
