Uschi Klein – researcher, writer, PHOTOGRAPHER

ABOUT ME

Hello, welcome to my website.

I am a researcher, senior lecturer and photographer with a strong academic background in photography (MA
in Photography from Goldsmiths College, University of London, and a PhD in Photography from University of Brighton).

During the academic year 2022-23, I was a visiting research fellow in the Department for Media and Communication Studies at Södertörn University in Stockholm, Sweden, and in 2025, I'm a Visegrad Research Fellow at the Open Society Archive in Budapest, Hungary.

Although I currently don't take on commissioned photography work due to my research commitments, I still use my camera for my research projects that relate to my work on photography and visual culture during the communist period in Romania (1948-1989). Alongside my publications in this area, I also curate photography exhibitions that aim to bring different people together: those, who lived during Romania’s communist era and those, who have no lived experience of that period but grew up in post-communist Romania. By taking an inter-generational approach that creates dialogue, the exhibitions aim to foreground the importance of preserving cultural memory.

Please get in touch if you're interested in my work and email me at: uschi [at] uschiklein [dot] com to discuss the work.

Thank you, and I look forward to hearing from you!
